After our day at Daylan it was off to Fethiye for a yummy dinner of local Turkish food (think Greek with minor changes) and then a well deserved rest at a nice hotel. If this is only day two, what will the rest of the trip bring?! One other oddity, while we were on the river boat there was an earthquake that we didn't even notice (being on water) but later at Fethiye we felt an aftershock as we relaxed in bed. A little freaky but no damage done.

Day 2 - Daylan and Fethiye
Before one talks about the day, one must discuss the prior evening. We had a wonderful dinner of swordfish with an Aegean sun setting in the background; all good, and then the siren's call of Bodrum's nightlife filled our ears. What started as a short walk along the waterfront ended up being more than two hours of people watching fun and beer. In itself not a bad thing but it resulted in us returning to our hotel around 1:30am ... and our next day started at 8:30am ... so we were groggy. Fortunately, we managed to grab some sleep in the car and by the time we arrived at Daylan we were much refreshed. Daylan was simply amazing! We lunched on the riverbank looking at ancient tombs carved in the cliff face and were blessed with not one but two huge turtle sightings!
After lunch we explored the ancient ruined city nearby before heading to the mud baths for a spa type treatment (at a cost of $3 each). The "spa" involved immersing ourselves in sulphurous spring water and then covering ourselves head to toe in mud! While we may have looked like some sort of cannibals from the jungle, we didn't care as it really did wonders for the way our bodies felt!

Turkey Day 1 -- Didyma
The start of our Turkey travels was a late arrival in Istanbul which, much to our dismay, caused us to miss our original flight to Bodrum. We managed to get on a a later flight and of course it ended up being delayed! We eventually landed in Bodrum around 11pm (we had originally been scheduled to arrive around 7pm) and even though it was Friday night and Bodrum is a party town, our first evening was a light meal and then off to bed as the flights had worn us both out.
Saturday morning started with a yummy breakfast including fresh OJ, fresh eggs and all sorts of odd Turkish offerings. We then met our guide/driver Kemal and it was off to the Temple of Apollo at Didyma with a couple stops (Milas, Lake Bafa) on the way. The ruins at Didyma are really cool; a massive pagan temple with columns as thick as Christos is tall!
After the tour we had a light lunch and then a drive by of the ruins of Miletus (our guide informed us that if we exited the car we would have to pay and there is not too much to see). We then drove back to Bodrum, all the while chatting with Kemal about history, religion, culture, food, where to buy carpets (not in Istanbul) and other tidbits of Turkish information. We are off to dinner at a fish place in a couple hours and hope that our maritime proximity means fresh and yummy seafood.

France 2011 - After the Fact!
We were remiss in not blogging during our 2011 Summer Trip to France. This entry serves as a summary of those two lovely weeks ...
We arrived in Paris during the Canada Day weekend and caught the train down to Avignon where we settled into a lovely hotel (Le Cloitre St. Louis) that was once a monastery. After an afternoon nap, we decided to wander around Avignon in the evening and stop in somewhere for a glass of wine. We found a lovely little spot and split a bottle of red over dinner. After that we wandered Avignon, stopped in at a Cuban style bar and found some 420 youths hanging out in the street. We finally stumbled back to our hotel some time after midnight, but not before stopping in at the Irish bar near our hotel for one last drink!
The next day we began our bike and barge trip through Province / the Camargue. It was a wonderful trip filled with good rides (flat generally 35 to 45 km a day), good conversations (we bonded with Bill and Sheila, Ozzys who had won the bike trip in a lottery; he was an avid cyclist, she a little less so), many bottles of wine and a wide variety of sights! The first day was a bike trip up to Chateauneuf (several bottles were of course purchased) followed by a several days heading down the Rhone to reach the Camargue. We visited various towns including Arles (famous for Van Gogh and the Roman amphitheatre; and we visited the spot of the famous bridge Van Gogh painted), as well as Vallebregues (Don't Talk About Rabbit Club), Tarascon (home of the legendary Tarrasque!), Les Baux (which gave its name to Bauxite and where we toured the medieval town donning period armour), Aigues Mortes (where we saw flamingoes while riding and where we witnessed the fabulous Miss Aigue Mortes show!) and St Maries-de-la-Mer (where gypsys have their annual gathering and come from all over Europe).
During the trip we would bike from one spot to the next during the day while the canal boat we were staying on would meet us at our destination. A very convenient way to travel as we stayed in the same room each night but at a different town! The only downside was we were a bit trapped on the boat for (our included in the price) meals; which were average (not what we were looking for in France!) and the hostess really wanted us to buy her booze (at inflated prices) while on the boat (we managed to circumnavigate this by keeping a bottle of wine in our cabin and going down for refills by the glass). We also skipped out on dinner on the boat a couple of times which was well worth it as we had some amazing food (Rabbit Club!). There were a little over a dozen other guests on the boat from the US, Germany and other parts European. We were the youngest guests on the cruise. The group of us would all head out on bikes together in the morning with our German guide. As a column of bicycles moves only as its slowest member, we were often a bit frustrated at the pace so we would take off ahead on our bikes and do little side excursions. Once the group missed this amazing olive oil factory by the side of the road, we went in and tasted a dozen olive oils only leaving when we had loaded up on the wonderful olive oil products sold!
The boat/bike tour finally ended in Aigues Mortes and we boarded a train to take us to Burgundy ...
Our stay in Burgundy lasted about three days. We lodged at an old castle that was being refurbished and spent the days touring the local countryside. We visited monasteries, castles, manor houses, an amazing natural spring (where we filled a bottle full of water that we used on the rest of our trip just to wash our hands; it made them feel smooth) and quaint medieval towns. The stay at the castle was good although a bit expensive.
In addition to visiting local restaurants, we had a wonderful meal prepared by the hostess done in a traditional medieval style! We enjoyed Epoisses cheese in the village of Epoisses and on the way to Paris we bought Chablis in Chablis!
Our trip ended with a weekend in Paris and the celebration of christos's 40th birthday under the fireworks of Bastille Day! A wonderful trip that included the fulfillment of one of Christos' life goals; his birthday in Paris!

Kohunlich
Wednesday the 29th started with a yummy breakfast of coffee and P's delicious baked goods
before we got on the road around 11:30am for the hour drive to Kohunlich, a ruined Maya city. The drive was uneventful and we arrived before 1pm at the site. The next threehours was spent wandering over the ruins and enjoying the jungle. The temple of the Masks is not to be missed but neither are the views from the 27 Steps Building. We saw a pair of toucans on the way out which was a treat as they are quite shy. After our trek through Kohunlich, it was off to Chetumal (the big city!) for shopping at a grocery store in the mall! A bit surre

Tacos for breakfast
After a night of catching up with C&P (and a few drinks perhaps), the next day began with a leisurely coffee and excellent Patricia oat cake. We watched the birds and planned out some things to do while here before the four of us headed off to the local roadside taco stand. It was the best taco breakfast ever. The men each had four, the women three and some coca cola was shared. The tacos were excellent and the bill came to $15.
Adventure in Mexico!!
We decided to do a little something different this year for the annual birthday vacation. Christos brought me to Mexico. We came down to see friends that have been living down here for the past few years - Crispin and Patricia (also known as C&P). we arrived in Cancun on Monday nad spent Monday night at a hotel close to the airport. On Tuesday we got up early, picked up our rental car and began the four hour trek to Bacalar..

We arrived in good time after buying some 'speedbump' Pina and oranges roadside from a group of Mexican women.
The weather is perfect and we settle in quickly to the slower pace of life in a little Mexican town..
Stay tuned, more adventures to come.
